After the return of the Taliban to power in 2021, Afghan women judges who had championed the rule of law were forced to flee for their safety. Arriving in Canada, many faced the challenge of rebuilding both their lives and professional identities.
At the University of Calgary, support programs developed in partnership with the International Association of Women Judges are helping these accomplished jurists strengthen language skills, navigate Canada’s legal system, and reconnect with meaningful work in the justice community.
Their journey is one of resilience, renewal, and an enduring commitment to justice — no matter the borders.
