Tracy Engelking Appointed Chair of the Specific Claims Tribunal

The CCIAWJ is pleased to congratulate our Board member and colleague Tracy Engelking on her appointment as Chairperson of the Specific Claims Tribunal. She has been appointed for a five-year term, commencing on August 17, 2026.

Prior to her appointment, Justice Engelking served as a judge of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, Family Court, and was widely respected for her work in family and child protection law. Throughout her career, Justice Engelking has demonstrated a deep dedication to advancing access to justice and building meaningful relationships with Indigenous communities.

The Government of Canada established the Specific Claims Tribunal in 2008 as an independent adjudicative body. A joint initiative with the Assembly of First Nations, the Tribunal adjudicates claims relating to alleged breaches of the Crown’s legal obligations relating to treaties, reserve lands and resources, and First Nations’ trust funds. The Chairperson supervises and directs the work of the Tribunal.

We wish Justice Engelking every success in this new leadership position and look forward to the continued positive impact of her service as she advances the important work of reconciliation.
