October 18th is Persons Day in Canada.

On October 18, 1929, the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council of Great Britain, at that time Canada’s highest appeal court, declared that the legal definition of “persons” included women.

Although more time would pass before Indigenous women and women of Asian descent were extended rights under this expanded definition, the decision marked the beginning of many women’s increased participation in public and political life.
